A building that will stand against natural disaster for the safety of the Corn Creek District, Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota, is being partially funded through a grant from USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities Economic Impact Initiative (EII).  While providing a safe haven for the residents, the community building will also provide a space for health care and emergency services and a facility for community youth.

If a community building is going to offer so much in integral services for the area, it should also be energy efficient.  The foam forms for the walls will be filled with concrete and will add greatly to the insulation and temperature control of the building.

“This project will provide a valuable resource to the Corn Creek District and surrounding Rosebud communities,” said Rural Development State Director Elsie Meeks.  “Whereas the community’s previous facility did not have running water, restrooms and limited electrical capacity; the new building will provide crucial services to the community”.

Funded in part through the EII grant, the project was also funded by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Sicangu Wicoti Awanyakape Corporation (Housing Authority) and Housing and Urban Development.

“For years, Corn Creek Community has been without a decent community building and now with the funding from USDA Rural Development, this community can now enjoy benefits that were never fully realized before, access to health care and emergency services and a gathering spot for our youth to enjoy themselves. I commend everyone connected with this project; your efforts are well appreciated by the community and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Wopila Tanka,” said Rosebud Sioux Tribal Chairman, Rodney Bordeaux.

The USDA Rural Development EII program is specifically targeted to rural communities with extreme unemployment and severe economic depression. In addition to community facilities, the program also provides funding to help rural communities finance essential health services, and the purchase of equipment which will provide vital services to rural residents.
